To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence... 'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Eating Like A Baby Bird.

Moms has had another change . I don't know what to think of her sometime. For months we have been trying to get her to eat. It use to take hours to feed her until I decided not to force feed her anymore. But now she just opens her month for every bite. Like a baby bird. Of course it has to be something sweet. She is still on her Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal diet. But who cares. And the Thicken is working so well. No more getting chocked. I have found that if I make it thick enough for a spoon she likes it better. The peach puree and yogurt are hit too. I even crush her pills and put in it. She used to not eat her crushed pill in anything because of the taste. So I mix it in her drink. But now it is back to Applesauce or puree.

A pill crusher is a must have device. I have two .

  1. You are so sweet to work with her instead of trying to force things, i know that I would enjoy something sweet if i wasnt hungry and i know soft foods are always easier for the elderly. PS have i told you that you are an angel lately

  2. When my MIL was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I read several books to get the best opinion on it. One of the best was written by a daughter of a patient. When I read your blog, I think of how much an Alzheimer patient is like a child in reverse. You don't know from day to day what to expect from her. Sadly, with our parents, we must find that patience that we had when we raised our children. I gathered up my patience this morning with my mother who is 89. She has her mind, for the most part, but sound judgement is not there! I admire your ability to make it through every day.

  4. I think the label "angel" suits you just fine, Karen! And you do have patience!

As to why your Mom has gone from refusing food to opening her mouth like a baby bird, you will never figure it out, but just enjoy it while it lasts! Feed her whatever she'll eat, but you already know that.
    Good luck!

  7. I totally agree with the others, you are an angel of a daughter, and it always sounds to me like you have a lot of patience with your mother, and I know that can be very hard at times.

I like the change on your blog.... looking good!
    Hugs,
