To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Thick-it or ThickenUp

I finally got mom some stuff to thicken her drinks. I ask the hospice nurse for some. It is working great. Mom is not choking at all on her liquids. I even put some in soup. She ate it but still likes Oatmeal better. I would rather used Potato Flakes to thicken soup so she can get more nutrition.

Ours is called Thicken up. It works great. You can make it just a little thick where it will go though a straw or real thick like pudding and you can use a spoon. Depends on if mom will drink or won't rather I use straw or spoon. She is different every meal.

We are getting so much snow. It is very pretty. About 5 inch's and still snowing. I am glad to be in the nice warm house. My son got snowed in at his girlfriends. Not sure if on purpose or accident. What do you think?

  2. Karen you're such a caring and thoughful daughter. I'm so glad you have hospice to help you find these wonderful products to help you and your mom.

I bet the snow is beautiful! I like looking at snow pictures, but I'm glad we don't have any...

I'm chuckling, thinking how happy your son and his girlfriend must be, to be snowed in together..... planned or not ....

    Stay warm and safe...

  5. I had to chuckle at your son's plight (LOL). I was talking to my sister. She is so frustrated with her son who seems to be making some dumb choices lately, including where he stays, etc. He'll call when he needs something!

  6. Yeah, I have been using those thicken products since mom has been on hospice. I have to thicken everything, although there isn't too much that she actually takes in anymore. I used to go through about 3 1/2 cans a week. But they have certainly been good to have, was struggling with other methods of thickening her beverages and foods.

  7. Oh I would imagine he got snowed in on purpose. I'm sure the snow wouldn't have kept him away from her if he was at home when the snow came! :-)

  9. My Dad, who has Parkinson's, needs to have his thin liquids thickened to nectar-consistency, so we also use the thickener. My Dad calls it "pectin," because he remembers his mother using pectin to thicken jellies, but these thickeners are really just cornstarch, in an easily dissolved form.

it's so good you are doing this; aspiration pneumonia from swallowing problems are a leading cause of death for people with diseases that affect muscles -- like Parkinsons and Alzheimer's. It's a relatively "easy" preventive.

My Mom didn't have swallowing issues, interestingly enough, at least not until she got to the point where she refused to swallow at all -- and would not even take her Ensure.

She could swallow, but she would not.
